Yes, I’ve been absent. We were in D.C. for a weekend with friends (and our first trip to Mount Vernon for their first homeschoolers’ day). Then, we drove sixteen hours to Wisconsin to visit family for a week. A little over 24 hours after getting home (after again driving all night), my sister-in-law arrived for Thanksgiving week.
November has been insane. I’m hoping that translates to a nice, calm, boring, contemplative December.
In amends for being absent, I present the “are you sure she’ll think it’s funny?” cake. My mother-in-law had heart valve replacement surgery and missed her birthday. Now, she has a cow heart valve. So, for celebrating her birthday late, I made the Broken Hearts Cattle Ranch cake!
The fences and entry arch are chocolate, melted and piped (with a plastic bag, snipped at one corner) onto waxed paper. When the chocolate cools, you very carefully peel the chocolate off and put it in place by cutting a bit of a slit into the cake icing, then filling at the bottom a bit to help it keep upright. I disguised breaks in the fence with flowering vines.
Hearts are repeated in the fence and the flowers. And, yes, I washed the toy cow before putting it on the cake!
My MIL thought it was funny.
